: Come closer and see Robert Smith up a tree
Interviewer: Which ‘Faith’ motivated you to do your last album?
Robert Smith: Not necessarily a religious faith but that profound dimension that we know that exist, an even vaster plan that applies to everyone. There are recognizable limits in life, play with them and don’t get obsessed by the notions and realities of race, sex or money. If people truly knew that they’re going to die someday their lives would be less mediocre.

Robert Smith on Seventeen Seconds

"The songs were written with a certain sound in mind; although they are different. Play for today has a very upbeat tempo, but still it has this certain … sound and feeling. And that’s what I wanted to achieve on the whole album. What I mean with this feeling? All the lyrics were written in the course of two weeks and they are all about the same topic: the crisis in the relationship with my girlfriend. That’s why it’s a contemplative and sad album. During that period I was sick of everything we were doing. I got tired of giving shows, The Cure, everything!’"
